Cantu ‘Natural Hair’ Products Review

Cantu Natural Hair Products Review

In this post I’ll be highlighting the haircare brand Cantu, and reviewing 7 of their most popular products from their ‘Natural Hair’ range. Before I get started, I want to mention that this is NOT a sponsored post; I’m just a big fan!

If you haven’t heard of Cantu before, they’re an American haircare brand designed for people with wavy and curly hair. Their products are really great for people with afro-Caribbean hair. I have recently discovered though that this is NOT a black-owned brand.

Their products are quite unique in that they are sulphate free and highly moisturising at an affordable price point. Cantu’s products are easily recognisable by their bright orange packaging and delicious coconutty scent. They have so many different products beyond your typical shampoo and conditioner, such as deep moisturising masques and split-end treatments.

What makes Cantu so good for afro hair?

If you’ve got wavy or curly hair, you’ll enjoy this brand. But I think those with afro-Caribbean hair (like me) will LOVE this brand. This is because afro-textured hair tends to be dry and sometimes brittle. If you have afro hair, you’ll know that our hair doesn’t get greasy; instead, we need ALL the moisture we can get! The fact that afro hair is quite dry and brittle is one of the main causes of frizzy, unmanageable curls.

When afro hair is moisturised and healthy, it is better able to form curls or ringlets, making the curls more defined and reducing frizz!

Because Cantu’s products are not only highly moisturising, they are sulphate free, I have seen such a difference in my hair in the year and a half that I’ve been using their line. My typically dry, frizzy, brittle hair is so much curlier and healthier. My curls are springier than ever and I’ve also noticed a reduction in dandruff. As I have a dry scalp (no doubt as I have afro-Caribbean hair), Cantu’s products keep my scalp more balanced because they’re moisturising and sulphate-free.

So, what are sulphates and why might they be bad for afro hair?

I’ve mentioned sulphates quite a few times in this post already, and you might be wondering what they are and why they matter. Sulphates are the ingredients in haircare and skincare products that are responsible for foaming. Hand soaps and foaming facial cleansers typically have a very high concentration of sulphates because they cleanse our skin by producing lots of foam. Foam captures the oils, bacteria and other particulates and lifts them off the skin, allowing them to be rinsed away when you rinse the soap off your skin.

Although this is great (and very important) for hand soap, it’s not so great for our hair. Shampoos often contain large amounts of sulphates, as they foam intensely when you’re washing your hair. This is what makes some hair products so drying- as sulphates are so good at cleansing, they remove all your natural oils and can leave your hair stripped and dry. The thing is, our hair doesn’t need such intense washing! That’s why sulphate-free hair products are so great for people with dry, frizzy hair. They are far less harsh and drying.

In short, sulphates are great for soaps but not so great for our hair. But if you’ve got an oily scalp, sulphates might not be an issue for you!

Why do I love Cantu?

A short summary of the above: I love this line as they’re affordable, they smell great, and they keep my hair looking bouncy and healthy like no others. My hair has gotten so much stronger since I started using these products and I can’t imagine not using some of these treatments now!

Cantu Natural Hair Products

Here are the products that I have tried so far:

1) Cleansing Cream Shampoo
2) Hydrating Cream Conditioner
3) Shea Butter/Argan Oil Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream
4) Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream
5) Deep Treatment Masque
6) Comeback Curl Next Day Curl Revitalizer
7) Split End Mender Strengthening Mist

I’ll now review each of these products!

1) Cleansing Cream Shampoo

I love this shampoo. It doesn’t foam as much as other shampoos but it foams just enough to leave your hair feeling clean. And it doesn’t strip your hair and leave it all dry! This is because it is a sulphate-free shampoo. It smells great and it’s really affordable.

I have now switched to a Lush plastic-free shampoo bar to be a bit more eco-friendly, but I much prefer using Cantu’s Cream Shampoo!

2) Hydrating Cream Conditioner

The Hydrating Cream conditioner goes so well with the shampoo. It’s super hydrating and gives my hair deep moisturisation. It provides plenty of slip which allows me to brush my hair easily in the shower. This is my all-time favourite conditioner.

3) Shea Butter/Argan Oil Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream

I have tried the Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream in both the Shea Butter and Argan Oil and I LOVE them both! This is my holy-grail haircare product. I truly can’t go without this now.

This is a thick cream that comes in a huge tub. The value on this product is amazing as I pay £4.99 for a tub and it lasts me months and months.

After washing my hair, I squeeze out the excess water, then apply a 50p coin sized amount of this cream. I brush it through and let my hair air-dry, allowing this cream to hold my curls and deeply moisturise my hair.

This cream reduces my frizz and holds my curls for 3 days. I notice such a huge difference in my hair texture when I don’t use this cream (it’s frizzier and my curls are less defined).

This one is great for those with afro hair but might not be suitable for those with loose curls because it is quite thick, heavy and moisturising.

4) Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream

This lightweight cream is fantastic at defining curls and reducing frizz. This one is more suited to people with wavy hair and loose curls because of the fact that it is not as thick and moisturising as the leave-in conditioning repair cream. I highly recommend anyone who has wavy or curly hair (especially if it’s frizzy) to take a 50p coin sized amount of this cream and scrunch it through their hair to see how defined and sleek the hair can look!

5) Deep Treatment Masque

The Deep Treatment Masque has the thickest texture out of all of these products, and the tub is slightly smaller than the Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream. But this doesn’t mean it’s not great value! This is a hair life-saver.

I’ve just come back from Korea where I only had 1 afro hair product, and my hair was feeling so dry and lifeless. I bought this cream online and even after one application my hair was so much more alive, springy and moisturised.

This is not a product to be used every day; it’s more of a deep treatment. I use this once a week, by smoothing it onto my hair a couple of hours before washing it. This is great for those who have very dry hair or have heat or chemical damage.

The one thing about this cream is that it doesn’t have great slip, so do not buy this if you want to use it as a de-tangling cream.

6) Comeback Curl Next Day Curl Revitalizer

The Curl Revitalizer is one of their latest products that I’ve tried. It is a watery product that comes in a spray bottle. This spray must be shaken before use as the cream and water separates when it’s been sitting still for a while. This is no bother at all, and when mixed it becomes milky.

This spray is super, super lightweight, and for those who want to re-define their waves or curls but don’t want to add any weight to their hair; this is for you!

I have found that this one is a bit sticky though, but I don’t really mind this on my hair. It does re-activate my curls but I don’t think I’ll use this one much because to really form nice neat curls I need to brush my hair. This product does not provide enough creaminess, slip, or hydration to do that. Because of this, it just re-activates my curls that sit on the outside of my hair. This shouldn’t be an issue for people with looser curls though, as your hair generally has less volume so the product can access all your curls better.

7) Split End Mender Strengthening Mist

Last but not least, this Split End Mender is quite an interesting product. It is a clear runny liquid that also comes in a spray bottle. I haven’t found that this one is sticky, but I also can’t tell if it’s doing anything either.

The name of this product is a bit misleading; you can’t mend split ends; you can only prevent them! I’ll have to test this one for a bit longer to see if it does strengthen and prevent split ends.

Overall, I’m such a fan of Cantu’s products (as you can probably tell!). I love that their products are extremely moisturising while not breaking the bank. I also love how their shampoo is sulphate-free; I really notice the difference in my hair when using sulphate-free products. I would recommend giving this one a go to see if you notice a difference too!

I will continue using their Hydrating Cream Conditioner, their Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream and their Deep Treatment Masque for a long, long time. But I will update you all if I find products that work better than these!

Please comment below if you’ve tried any of these products, or any Cantu products!

Stay safe,

  1. Thanks so much for this guide. I’ve recently become a natural person. I wanted to really define my natural curls at a low-cost, so, I tried the Cantu Moisturizing Curl Activator Cream. It really works great and defines my curls perfectly. I will now go and purchase more Cantu products and begin a new hair care routine. Thanks!

  2. Where do I even begin.. Well I went to a salon to have my hair bleached, I wanted to go gray. Well long story short and $1,000+ later, my hair was damaged beyond belief. My friend told me about Cantu products because i was on the verge of shaving my hair. My hair was brittle to comb it, desert dry and falling out. I cut what I could of my hair and then i bought the deep conditioner, the shampoo and conditioner and the leave in conditioner and 9 months later I love my hair again!!! Y’all saved me!!! I dont know the science of your products, but I’m very happy again and i cant thank you enough❤. Consider me a Cantu customer for life!! I wish i could post a before and after picture, you’d also be amazed ..
